Food is moved through the gut by peristalsis.
Muscles move food because mechanical action is needed to get food through the system.

ReplyDeletePeristalsis is the movement of food through the gut by a series of contractions of muscles which push the food along when the circular muscles contract and the longitudinal muscles relax the guy narrows and vice verca this creates a sort of wave of expansions and contractions forcing the food through and it is required so that we don't rely on gravity for food to move through the gut
